Feel free to browse a few of the photos of my aircooled VW
- 1970 VW Type-3 Variant A
The car was bought in 1993 and after some minor brake work to
be able to drive it for a few days it was duly put away in storage to await
its glory days when it passes 30 years old, considered to be the minimum
age of a vintage car in Norway - resulting in no road-tax and pennies for
insurance.
Here's the car brought out after 7 years of accumulating
dust in a barn
Work had to be done, brakes, fuel lines, new fuel
tank. All the engine needed was an oil-change!
New 'old thread' tyres from Michelin Norway, and
hubcaps from German & Swedish
The photos above were taken in Trondheim were the car has spent
most of its life as far as I know. However, after buying it I first moved
to Scotland for a year, and then settled in Oslo - 500 km. away from Trondheim.
The car was towed into my parents drive, hoping to get it ready to drive
down to Oslo over the weekend. Didn't quite turn out that way though, and
I had to return to work without the car. Next time up everything went after
plan though (with some hard needed parts sourced in the meantime). First
a day test-driving around Central Norway, before we set out on the 8-9 hour
drive with my girlfriend as support in our Impreza. It all went well though,
without any incidents. Good going for an engine which hadn't run for 7 years!
Photographed prior to the 500km. drive to Oslo
Co-driver Cecilia
First event in Oslo, winning a vintage race, "Strømmenløpet".
Cecilia was an excellent map-reader and co-driver!
This summer I hope to get "Vilde Variant" back to her
original colour, Royal Red. I'm also still in need of some better chrome
bumpers as well as new seat covers for the '71 highback front seats. Lots
of new rubber parts are already waiting to go on once the respray has been
done. Some new carpet bits have also been put in place, courtesy of 'Spirit
of the 50s' in England. Thanks to Knut from Michelin for the tyres, to Harald,
the previous owner, for building a good engine, Knut at 'Veteren & VW
Service' for getting hold of parts, Morten from Kongsberg for the fuel tank,
and 'Christoffersen & Bekken' for the mechanical work I couldn't take
on myself.
Don't forget to wave if you pass us!!!
I'm a member of Oslo VW Club, and they have an excellent web-page
so visit the link below. Great to buy and sell cars or parts, or just to
discuss things around the aircooled VW scene or catch up on what shows are
on near you.
I'm also a member of a British VW club, visit their page for
many links into the various UK clubs and events.
As well as owning this Type 3, I used to have a 1981 model T2.
A bus which was built to look like the Norwegian style Caravelle (a 6 seater),
and also the second to-last year with the 2 litre aircooled pancake engine.
See my old page on this BUS.
